Handstands, Inversions and Arm balances workshop with Sylvia Garcia

Date: Saturday, 17th October
Time: 4.30-7.30pm
Price: £30

Handstands have become more and more common in yoga classes over the past few years but it’s tricky in led classes to really take the time to break down the mechanics of the posture to fully understand the alignment and strength required. In this workshop we will be looking at exploring and approaching arm balances from hand placement and alignment to full handstand. We will be looking at creating strength and stability in the shoulder girdle and the core, which is not only an important way of holding yourself upside down on your hands, but also to build the confidence that is often lacking when approaching these more challenging Asana.

Remembering that many of these poses take years of practise before they feel stable and comfortable, the basics and techniques which we will explore will be the perfect foundation for this. For those who are more experienced with arm balances and handstands, we will look at variations and transitions to further challenge ourselves. Approach this with a playful attitude. Fall, laugh and try again creating a fun and joyful facet to the practise.

Suitable for those who have some previous yoga experience, not for complete beginners.

Christian Pisano has been practising Iyengar Yoga for many years. More than 20 years ago he lived in Pune for several years in order to be close to and learn directly from his guru, B.K.S. Iyengar. His philosophical inclinations are those of the non-dual approaches, especially that of the ‘Trika’ system known as Kashmir Shaivism. He is one of only 3 western Iyengar teachers worldwide who hold the Advanced Senior certificate and is the only European teacher with this level. He continues to study with the Iyengars annually in Pune and, with his wife, June, is the joint Director of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of Nice, France.

June Whittaker Pisano, after an earlier life in classical ballet, searched for another discipline and inspired by the sophistication and excellence of the teaching, found Iyengar Yoga in London more than 25 years ago. June moved to Nice in 1999 to co-direct the Institut de Yoga Iyengar de Nice with Christian. Inversions with Sylvia Garcia and Marc Hatvani

Date: 21st Feb, 27th Feb, 6th March
Time: 1.30-4pm, 6.30-9pm, 1.30-4pm
Price: £45 single session, £75 two sessions, £105 whole course

Let Marc and Sylvia turn your world upside down in this three part inversions intensive!

Over three sessions you will be shown all the techniques required to start building a solid inversion practise. These classes are progressive, however they can be also be booked individually. They are suitable for all levels, starting from complete beginner, with many advanced options being given to the more experienced practitioner.

Part 1: TURN THAT CROWN UPSIDE DOWN
Sunday, 21st February, 1.30-4pm

In this workshop we will be focusing on Sirsasana, headstand. Starting with alignment techniques and conditioning exercises, we will explore how to play with your headstand in a safe and confident way. Taking time to really embody how you should feel when upside down will be key, as well as looking for subtle refinements that can make this challenging asana easier and more accessible. We will not be using walls, rather we will show you how to approach your headstand correctly, where the danger of falling over does not exist!

For the more experienced practitioners we will also look at different arm and leg variations, as well as entries and transitions – such as into and out of bakasana (crow) and lowering into chaturanga dandasana, so that we can place the headstand into a flow.

Part 2: FEATHERING YOUR PEACOCK
Saturday, 27th February, 6.30-9pm

In this workshop we will be looking at Pincha mayurasana, the feathered peacock or forearm stand.

As with headstands, this session will begin with alignment and strengthening drills and techniques. Taking the time to understand the pose, and where it can go, and where you should go with it, will be key. We will be working in pairs for this and will be teaching safe and smart spotting techniques so that you can really explore your forearm stand safely and with confidence.

Again, we will give more advanced variations – learning how to enter from a straddle press as well as exploring vrishikasana, scorpion pose.

Part 3: STAND ON YOUR HANDS
Sunday, 6th March, 1.30-4pm

The final part of this course sees us exploring handstands. (Whoop!) Finding the balance between strength, flexibility and alignment is key for handstands, so we will work on understanding where the body should be when inverted. Looking at the entire body from fingertip placement to toes and working with a spotter, we will get the feel for the handstand line and explore many variations of entry. This is the perfect place to learn how to handstand if you have never attempted it before, and for the more experienced practitioners rest assured we will find many wonderful ways to challenge you.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be the opportunity at the end of the session to explore any other arm balances that are requested, so get thinking!

Primal Creatures, Primal Movement – A Scaravelli Inspired Workshop with Lara Stapleton

Date: Sunday, 13th March
Time: 1.30-4pm
Price: £25

This workshop explores the importance of being primal in movement and allowing yourself to evolve by going inside and softly unfolding from the ground up. As we move through the practice, you will explore the importance of gravity, space and breath and how these foundational principles are the integral part of connecting back to your primal being.

Through years of accumulated stress and anxiety in the body and living through the everyday challenges that life throws at us, we have lost the connection to our primal roots and our inner framework has collapsed, leaving us feeling ungrounded and unbalanced. But what lies beneath – the spine, the diaphragm and the nervous system – is where the depth of the yoga practice evolves and blossoms.

Moving with softness, grace and beauty, being attentive to the pauses at the end of each breath and allowing the body to unfold and move organically without force in a rhythmical and wave-like manner will have a profound effect on healing the body and mind.

Through mindful movement we will work deeply on areas of resistance and injury, releasing tension and returning energy and balance back to our epicentre and sacred inner space. We rediscover our natural primal state.

Acroyoga with Sylvia Garcia and Katie Burn

Date: Sunday, 20th March
Time: 1.15-3.45pm
Price: £45

A yoga journey can often be a solitary one of self discovery and exploration. Working with a partner brings a completely new dimension to the practice as you learn to be aware of not only your own body and space but also someone else’s, this creates a completely new and very fun experience.

We will start with simple calibrations getting used to working with somebody else and exploring simple stretches using each others counterweight and will build up to more dynamic shapes and inversions. This is a brilliant practice for developing trust and communication as we learn to apply both of these things to the partner practice. We will also look at some simple acrobatic shapes which will always involve somebody spotting to ensure safety at all times.

You do not need to come with a partner but if you do have someone you would like to practice with this is a great opportunity to have a lot of fun and bond with that person.

Sylvia has been practicing yoga for 14 years and teaches extensively throughout London. Her practice includes Ashtanga, Dharma Yoga, Rocket yoga, Yin and arm balancing. She began practicing acroyoga a year and a half ago and since then it has become a huge part of her daily practice and has grown to include high level standing acrobatics and other circus skills.

Katie is an ex competitive gymnast and a gymnastics teacher of 9 years. She first discovered yoga 3 years ago as a way to manage chronic back pain and soon found that acroyoga was a perfect blend of the rehabilitative aspects of yoga and the adrenaline high of acrobatics. She has been training with Sylvia for a year and has a strong acrobatic practice as both a base and a flyer.

Warning: this is highly addictive due to fun content.

Ayurveda is a holistic system of healthcare that diagnoses and treats the underlying causes of disease, assessing initial symptoms preceding illness and bringing to light potential health issues prior to the full onset of cardinal signs and symptoms.
Ayurveda originated in fifth century India and is the Sanskrit term for ‘science of life’. It is one of the branches of the Vedas, the ancient Indian texts, and is the sister science of Yoga. Ayurveda is considered by many scholars to be the oldest system of healing on our planet.
According to Ayurveda every tiny cell in the human body, mind and spirit is composed of five elements Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.
In Ayurveda, each individual has a unique dosa – or constitution type. At the broadest level, an individual’s constitution type is a mix of three dosas: Vata (Ether and Air), Pitta (Fire and Water) and Kapha (Water and Earth).
Ayurveda is premised on the notion that all disease stems from imbalance of the dosas resulting from indulgence in unhealthy foods and activities.
The objective of Ayurveda is to rebalance an individual’s dosa to ensure wellness, health and happiness.

A Scaravelli Inspired Workshop – Awakening the Feet with Lara Stapleton

Date: Sunday, 16th October
Time: 1.30-4pm
Price: £30

The feet are the foundation to the temple of the body. Many people end up standing and walking for a lifetime on fallen or weakened arches which leads to compression of the ankle joints, strain on the spine and a painful posture.

This workshop explores the mechanics of the feet, how we require a solid foundation to support the balance, dynamic action and fluidity in the upper parts of the body. Waking the feet up, getting them strong, flexible, balanced, aligned, rooted and resilient is a basic starting point to building an intelligent and grounded yoga practice.

Hip stability flow with Ali King

Date: Sunday, 19th March
Time: 3-5pm
Price: 25

This hatha yoga workshop will examine your inner and outer hip muscles to help create stability in your hip joints. It is common to lay in your hip joints, either during longer holds in your yoga practice, or during the rest of your day off of your mat. This can be especially true for those with a lot of flexibility or weakness in their hip stabilisers. This workshop will help to create awareness and stability around the joint in the adductors and abductors.

This mindful practice will begin and end with guided healing aromatherapy meditation.

Pranic Pathways and the Inner Journey with Mira Mehta

Date: Sunday, 26th March
Time: 2.30-5.30pm
Price: £50 (£40 if booked before 28th February)

To experience the fruits of Yoga you have to prepare the ground carefully and methodically. What you experience depends on what you put in. If body and mind are blocked life energy (prana) does not flow harmoniously and Yogic development is hindered. In this practical Masterclass Mira shows the potential of asana practice to clear pranic pathways, explaining why accuracy is important and how body mechanics is entwined with the mind. She then shows how to reach a deeper level of connection with the body-mind complex, revealing an understanding that is usually hidden by the stresses and strains of daily life.

Mira Mehta is the most senior Yoga teacher outside India, recognised as an authority in all its aspects: asana, pranayama, philosophy and therapy. She has practised since childhood and taught since her teens and is at the forefront of developing the understanding of Yoga theory. In 1993 she was listed in The Best of British Women for her work in the field of alternative health.

Mira began Yoga as a child under BKS Iyengar and studied with him for several decades, receiving an Advanced Teaching Certificate from him. She also trained with her mother, Silva Mehta, who ran the first and only government-sponsored Yoga teacher training courses in the 1970’s in London. She has a Masters degree in Indian Religion, a diploma in Ayurveda (Basic) and has undertaken extensive postgraduate studies in Yoga philosophy.

She teaches extensively in the UK and abroad. Her website is a resource centre with articles on philosophy and practice. www.yogicpath.com

She has an interactive style of teaching, encouraging students to ask questions and clear doubts.

The Master class is open to all, although some prior experience of Yoga will be helpful.

We will be looking at how birthing positions can help you both to relax and release, so all the stages of your Labour can be supported effectively, as well as how massage can help to dissolve aches and pains naturally, and how hypnobirthing can be a useful technique that can help you both to stay calm and grounded through the experience.

Together we can discuss useful ways to manage fear and tension naturally, especially focusing on the period of time you are both at home. Keeping you relaxed, supported and loved is an important role for your birth partner and this workshop can enable and empower them, so that they have some resources to hand to stay calm and grounded throughout this extraordinary time.

It is a workshop that combines practical advice with tools that Deanne has and continues to use when assisting families as a ante-natal yoga therapist / Birth Partner / Doula.

Yin & Yang – An exploration of the active and passive body/mind with Mary Young

Date: Sunday, 14th May
Time: 3.15-5.30pm
Price: £25
In this workshop we integrate yoga with the principles of Chinese meridian theory and explore the concepts of both Yin & Yang.  The body/mind frequently moves out of kilter and we often find that we fall into one of two camps; either hyped (over-stimulated) or lethargic (depleted). Achieving a sense of equanimity when there is disharmony is tough so this practice will give you time to experience both elements with a combination of active Yang yoga with passive Yin yoga.  Our approach to yoga should not be ‘one size fits all’. We should adapt our practice to our needs. Together with essential pranayama, this workshop will give you some tools to perhaps recognise and bring your awareness to your changing energetic, physical and emotional needs as they arise in the future.

This practice is not advisable in pregnancy and some experience of a Vinyasa based practice (surya namaskar/sun salutations) is recommended.

Increase your confidence, will-power + self esteem: Exploring the third Chakra with James French

Date: Sunday, 25th June
Time: 1.15-4.15pm
Price: £35

Every emotion and aspect of our personality can be connected and attributed to a different Energy Centre or Chakra in the body. When we see someone dear to us we might refer to our heart “brimming with love”, or if we feel unable to communicate we might describe having a “frog in the throat”. And when we talk about someone with determination and will power we might speak of the “Fire in their belly”.

Through Yoga we can learn how to harness this fire and bring about a more harmonious third Chakra. Then we may begin to feel more confident, responsible, spontaneous, reliable, playful and experience a boost to our self-discipline, will-power, warmth and sense of humour.

This workshop will involve a short lecture and discussion in which you will learn about the third Chakra and receive some specific techniques to improve confidence and will-power which you can continue to practise at home. James will follow this with a Hatha practice, which will leave you feeling ready to take on the world!

All levels are welcome to attend, from complete beginners who would like to work on improving common issues such as having low self-esteem, being weak-willed or easily manipulated, to more advanced yogis who would like to delve deeper into the mysteries of Manipura Chakra.

James is a ERYT 500 hour Yoga Teacher, based in India and Thailand, where he focusses on Shadow Work with his Guru, Prem Baba, and divides the rest of his time equally between studying Tantric Yoga, and teaching 200 and 500 hour Teacher Training Courses.
It is a great source of pleasure to return to his hometown of London once or twice a year to offer workshops and courses.
James has trained and studied with Max Strom, Anodea Judith, David Swenson, Yogrishi Vishvketu, Tiffany Cruickshank, Agama Yoga and Tribe Yoga.

Handstands for Yogis with Sylvia Garcia

Date: Sunday, 23rd July
Time: 1.15-3.15pm
Price: £25
In this workshop we will be looking at the foundations of handstand and its practical application to a yoga flow. We will be coming at the handstand alignment from an acrobatic perspective in order to find a straight line that is not only more functional for transitions but much safer for the shoulder girdle than the more commonly seen yoga handstand alignment.

Sylvia taught herself how to stand on her hands over many years but really saw a huge change in her inversion practice when she started training it acrobatically. In this workshop she will share tips on how to improve your line, find balance and look at some of the transitions we commonly see in flow yoga styles today such as Dharma and Rocket.

This workshop is suitable for all levels. Whether you have never attempted a handstand before and are looking to start or have a strong practice and want to improve Sylvia will find something appropriate and suitable for you to play with.

The Power of Love: Opening the Heart Chakra with James French

Date: Sunday, 30th July
Time: 1.15-4.15pm
Price: £35
True Love, Selflessness, Compassion, Altruism, Balance, Harmony, Integration, Peacefulness, Self Love… These are all aspects of a healthy Anahata Chakra.

We have 7 main energy centres, and right in the middle there is the Heart Chakra… there are 3 above and 3 below. The Heart is our centre, our core and it is a bridge between the Material and Spiritual aspects of our being.

The Love that we find when we access this centre is not a romantic Love nor one that is focussed on an object of affection… It is a pure, unattached Love… Love experienced within, as a state of being. Through Yoga we can begin to cleanse and harmonise this Chakra, and begin to awaken Love as our primary guiding principal.

This workshop is made up of two parts. The first half is a lecture and discussion in which you will learn about the different aspects of this Chakra – How to balance and purify the heart… How a closed or excessively open fourth Chakra might affect our daily lives, and what you can do to resolve such issues. In the 2nd half of the workshop we will do a full heart-based Hatha practice. This will involve postures, movement, breath-work and meditation.

All levels are welcome to attend from beginners who would like to develop their heart energy to teachers and advanced practitioners who would like to dive deeper into the theory and practice of Anahata.

Gong bath with Leo Cosendai

Gong meditation is a powerful sonic practice. Gongs have been used as shamanic tools and celebratory instruments for thousands of years, and are truly part of the tradition that is sound healing, which uses techniques such as chanting, drums, and Tibetan bowls to name a few.

The gong produces harmonic and dissonant tones which give you the opportunity to experience altered states of consciousness, where the mind is aligned with the body. From being exposed to the tones of the gongs you may notice a major improvement in the quality of your sleep, a better ability to cope with stress, and a sense of familiarity with stillness and contentment.
